How to

Pins

A pin is a bookmark to anything: a conversation, an email thread, a Knowledge document or folder, a Library file, a Data record or saved view, a dashboard, a project or task, a settings page, an artifact your accomplice showed, or a web address. Pins live in the sidebar under PINS, in folders you arrange, and on the Pins page (/pins, or All pins in the sidebar) with search.

Pinning

  • ⌥P (Alt+P) pins what is open.
  • The Pin button on an email thread, a document or a Data record pins that thing; pressed again, it unpins.
  • ⌘K → Pin this.
  • Drop a link on the sidebar's pins: an app link pins what it opens, any other becomes a web pin.
  • Ask your accomplice: "pin this", "pin the Acme thread in Clients".

The same thing is never pinned twice.

Arranging

Drag a pin to reorder it, onto a folder to put it inside, or between rows to place it. Each pin's ⋯ menu (or a right-click) renames it, gives it a colour, moves it to a folder, makes it a superpin and removes it. Removing shows Undo for a few seconds; removing a folder removes what it holds. Folders open and close with their arrow, and remember it on every device.

Superpins

Up to seven pins are superpins: always at the top of the sidebar, opened with ⌥⇧1 … ⌥⇧7. Promote one from its menu or by dragging it to the top; a taken slot swaps.

When a target moves or goes

A pin keeps what it points at by a stable id: the record's, the thread's, the file's. A pinned document gets a uid in its front matter (a normal, recorded edit), so it stays pinned when it is moved or renamed — in Mandala at once, and outside Mandala (another device, a sync, a file manager) the next time pins are shown. When the target is truly gone, the pin stays, marked missing, until you remove it.

Tidying with your accomplice

Say "tidy my pins" (or Ask … to tidy on the Pins page). Your accomplice proposes folders, merges of duplicates and removal of missing pins, shown as the tree before → after. Nothing changes until you approve, by the card or in words; afterwards a Pins tidied note has Undo, or say "put it back".

Whose pins

Pins belong to the identity you act as: your own pins and a company's are separate, and they sync to your other devices like every record.
